Announcing the 2022 Victorian Premier's Design Awards Finalists

Finalists from this year’s Victorian Premier’s Design Awards have been announced with 93 projects making the cut from a field of more than 240 entries.

The Finalists showcase the best in design and architecture from Victoria and reinforce the state’s strength as Australia’s design capital.

Design innovation is celebrated across eight award categories: architecture, product design, service and strategy design, fashion design, digital and communication design, and a standalone category for student design.

Minister for Creative Industries Steve Dimopoulos said “Victoria’s innovative design industry delivers compelling design solutions that continue to impact millions of people across the globe, and this year’s shortlist showcases a local industry that stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s best."

Standout Finalists include an external heart pump designed to keep heart failure patients alive while waiting for heart transplants (magAssist VAD Heart Pump), and a new urban design strategy that cleverly integrates a network of new pathways and interstitial spaces for public access and enjoyment (Queen & Collins).

Other noteworthy Finalists include an innovative medication management platform for residential aged care facilities (Strong Care) and a novel pneumatic patient transfer device, designed to help moving patients in hospitals (Airlift).

Eight standout projects will be awarded Best in Category Awards and go in the running for the Victorian Premier’s Design Award of the Year, the state’s most prestigious design accolade.

Winners will be announced at the Victorian Premier’s Design Awards Ceremony in March 2023.

The Victorian Premier’s Design Awards have celebrated Victorian designers and businesses since 1996 – promoting the role design has in making products, spaces and experiences more functional, safe, efficient and sustainable.

Last year’s Victorian Premier’s Design Award of the Year was awarded to Savic Motorcycles, a high-performance electric motorbike, designed and developed in Victoria. Previous recipients include a world-first 3D diagnostic machine for measuring optical properties of the eye, an International Indigenous Design Charter and the Blackmagic Studio Camera, designed by renowned design team at Blackmagic Design in Port Melbourne.

Design is an important and growing part of Victoria’s creative industries and a strong contributor to the economy, injecting over $6 billion annually and supporting almost 200,000 jobs.
