Zeller Terminal 2 is Australias first locally-designed, all-in-one POS and payments solution enabling fast, secure, and affordable payments for businesses.

Zeller Terminal 2 is Australias first locally-designed, all-in-one POS and payments solution which enables businesses to get paid quickly, securely, and affordably.

Designed in Melbourne, Australia, Zeller Terminal 2 is a leading-edge payment and point of sale solution for any business that accepts electronic payments. Card payment terminals (EFTPOS Machines) are vital for secure in-person payment acceptance in todays increasingly cashless economy.

Over 85,000 businesses use Zeller Terminal to support all kinds of in-person commerce, from the market vendors, through to high-end restaurants (such as Chin Chin and Supernormal), to national franchise brands (such as Gelatissimo and The Cheesecake Shop).

Design Brief:

Typically, payment terminal design is bulky and impersonal, while being stylistically and functionally outdated. Payment terminals are often tethered to cables, provide only basic features of payment processing, periodically drop connection resulting in missed sales, and consume paper receipts costing both businesses and the environment. Having pioneered full-screen wireless payment terminal deployment in Australia with Zeller Terminal 1 launching in 2021, Melbourne-founded fintech scale-up Zeller was uniquely positioned to hear merchant feedback to inform the design of the new Zeller Terminal 2, released in August 2024. A full-screen payment terminal design must seamlessly incorporate security and accessibility in hardware, software and merchant onboarding. As a business tool to be used in busy environments, Zeller Terminal 2 needed to be portable, fast, and simple to use with minimal training, while also being durable enough for use in high-intensity environments (such as butchers or pubs), and beautiful enough for Australia’s finest restaurants.

This project was developed by:

Design Process

As a leading non-bank Australian payment provider, Zeller identified demand for a paperless payment terminal that was durable, portable, easy to use, and visually appealing — while offering powerful features for all kinds of businesses.

Zeller undertook a comprehensive development process involving user research, design iterations, pre-production testing, and precision manufacturing to deliver a completely unique product, both in industrial design and on-screen experience.

Zeller Terminal 2 features a minimalist, streamlined form. Its inverted channel side profile raises the front for card insertion and the rear for improved screen visibility and NFC reading. An LED-illuminated Zeller logo on the rear allows for customisable colour programming.

Ergonomically designed for both merchants and customers, the terminal is available in black, white, and graphite to suit diverse business aesthetics. Accessories, such as the T2 Dock, were designed holistically, so fit seamlessly with the Zeller Terminal 2 unit.

The T2 Dock provides consistent, wired charge and data, holding the terminal in place magnetically, for straightforward lift-and-replace as needed in busy environments.

Affordability is central to Zeller’s model. Strong supplier relationships and a direct-to-business approach allow Zeller Terminal 2 to retail at least 20% more affordably than comparable devices.

Extensive expertise, research, design development and software engineering went into the on-screen experience, to make it industry-leading in features and ease-of-use, while maintaining strict security and regulatory standards.

Paperless QR code receipts are an industry first, reducing paper consumption, alongside management and cost.

Zeller Terminal 2 is designed with a replaceable battery for long life, accessed via an underside snap-on panel. Due to security compliance for payment terminals, it’s not possible to open and repair a unit, however Zeller takes return of old units for testing and redeployment, in an effort to reduce waste and environmental impact.

This reuse program extends to paper-only packaging, with no plastics used.

Design Excellence

Zeller Terminal 2 is a simple, elegant, and innovative piece of payments technology, providing industry-leading features (many of them a world-first) including paperless receipts, a free built-in point-of-sale (POS) system, multiple options for stable and reliable connectivity (Wi-Fi, SIM card and ethernet docks), practical accessories, and ergonomic handling.

Business owners invest significant thinking, time, and money in order to present a unified brand and design aesthetic to customers interacting with them. Zeller Terminal 2 extends this opportunity to the point-of-payment — a primary and consistent interaction with every buyer and seller, ensuring that merchants can utilise Zeller Terminal 2 to showcase their brand and present a thoughtful payment experience that the is smooth and seamless to the buyer.

In an incredibly crowded market with over 45 payment terminal provider offerings in Australia, Zeller Terminal 2 stands out in terms of design excellence by combining innovation, reliability, security, handling, accessibility, and affordability that no other providers can.

Design Innovation

Other payment devices are bulky, generic and bland in design. They require paper rolls to print receipts, and don’t allow the business owner options for customisation or personalisation to their own business.

Zeller Terminal 2 offers a range of innovative, never-before-seen features allowing merchants to customise their payment acceptance experience. As a paperless device, Zeller Terminal 2 offers merchants three ways to offer customers receipts (tax invoices) — via email, SMS, or in an innovative new downloadable QR code receipt.

As payment is completed, customers are prompted to scan a unique QR code on the screen, to view and download their receipt to a smartphone. This is a new benchmark in sustainability and customer experience — and, with no need for a printer, Zeller Terminal 2s hardware design offers an elegant, small form factor.

Zeller Terminal 2 also comes with a free, built-in point-of-sale (POS) system, enabling merchants to create an item library, apply discounts, and track items sold directly from their payment terminal, rather than having to purchase additional hardware to process itemised transactions.

The inclusion of a free POS system is facilitated by the large touchscreen, and sets Zeller Terminal 2 apart from other card payment devices designed and developed in Australia.

Businesses using Zeller Terminal 2 can also customise their device by selecting from three hardware colour options (black, white, graphpite), and also display a customisable screensaver with their business logo or promotional message on the 6.5" full-colour HD screen.

This level of customisation is unparalleled in payment terminal design, and allows business owners the chance to showcase their brand and business (see examples here: https://www.myzeller.com/au/blog/three-ways-to-boost-your-brand-with-zeller).

Attention to detail in the design ranges from the purpose-oriented form and spec, to selection of grip-ready applied finishes, and even design of unique sounds for card read, transaction approval, and errors.

Design Impact

Since launch, Zeller Terminal 2 has quickly established a user base of over 85,000 businesses, especially in the hospitality and retail sectors. It now accounts for more than one third of all Zeller Terminal units sold every week.

Zeller estimates that over 500kg of plastic packaging material has been saved compared with conventional packaging, as packaging for Zeller Terminal 2 is plastic-free.

Furthermore, the Zeller Terminal 2 packaging, once expended or sold, can be returned and reused by Zeller for refurbished unit sale, ensuring that both physical terminal hardware and packaging can be re-used to minimise the design impact over the long-term.

Ongoing, each Zeller Terminal 2 sold means another business which does not need to use paper receipt rolls, which can add up to many hundreds of kilos of paper for each business each year.

A recent study by Zeller estimated that the total amount of printed receipt paper saved through the adoption of Zeller Terminal in the past 12 months could wrap around the MCG over 22 times!

The success of Zeller Terminal 2 has turned heads in the payments terminal sector, where design is normally a very low priority.

Zeller has strived to create a completely unique, elegant, simple design aesthetic, combined with an outstanding software UX.

This helps Zeller’s clients (business owners) provide streamlined, enjoyable, beautiful customer experiences, which in-turn helps these merchants and small businesses owners in Victoria — and across Australia — contribute to their economy and thrive.

Circular / Sustainability Criteria

Zellers design team deployed several sustainable development goals in the development of Zeller Terminal 2. These were aligned to the SDGs (a set of 17 global goals adopted by the UN as a blueprint for addressing global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice).

Good Health & Wellbeing, 5. Gender Equality.  Cash acceptance enables illicit activities, including trafficking of people and banned substances. Card payments accepted with Zeller Terminal 2 are traceable and reportable, do not support payments for these kinds of activities.

Decent Work and Economic Growth.  Zeller’s platform makes it simple for businesses and entrepreneurs of all sizes and stages to take card payments.  Zeller has also  a Sedex audit on our supply chain, including our manufacturing partners in China. A small number of non-critical issues where found and addressed. Furthermore, a Bureau Veritas Clarity audit scored our manufacturing partners 89.50%, with all seven key areas passing the audit. We are confident that the supply chain for Zeller Terminal 2 supports fair, healthy, sustainable and safe work and processes.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure.  Zeller Terminal 2 drove the innovation and adoption paperless receipts and providing cashless payment infrastructure.

Responsible Consumption and Production.  By eliminating the receipt printer, the overall unit comprises less raw materials to ensure responsible consumption.

Life on Land.  By eliminating paper rolls and printers; eliminating plastic from packaging; and using responsibly sourced paper for packaging (recycled where appropriate).

Australia produces 10.6 billion paper receipts annually, but because of their chemical coating, none of them can be recycled. With consumers and businesses becoming increasingly aware of their environmental footprint, many are choosing digital receipts as a convenient and sustainable alternative.

Zeller Terminal 2 embraces this step forward, doing away with a receipt printer all together.
