Design Brief:

Shingleback Off Road was tasked with solving a widespread problem in motorbike transport: making it safer, easier, and more stable for everyday riders and families using passenger vehicles. Existing carriers often require awkward lifting, two-handed balancing, and unreliable tie-downs, leading to frustration and risk of damage or injury.

The design brief called for a solution that would eliminate these issues—streamlining the loading process, enhancing safety, and making motorbike transport accessible. The intended outcome was a professionally designed carrier that could be operated simply, even by a single user, while remaining rugged and reliable in tough Australian conditions.

Additional objectives included enabling dual transport of both motorbikes and mountain bikes, ensuring road compliance, and using sustainable, locally sourced materials. The resulting MOTO rack, with its patent-pending Lock Chock system and world-first compatibility with the Shingleback 2B90 rack, achieves these goals—delivering genuine innovation, long-term value, and versatility for all users.

Design Process

The design process for the Shingleback MOTO rack was thorough, practical, and user-driven from the start. Our goal was clear: create a safer, easier way for riders to load, carry, and secure motorbikes—especially on passenger vehicles—without the instability or hassle of traditional carriers. We kicked off by listening to feedback from the riding community and our own team of keen adventurers. Early concepts were sketched, stress-tested, and continually refined with local fabricators and engineers.

Key challenges included achieving true one-handed loading, meeting strict weight and safety limits, and ensuring stability both on and off-road. Over 12 months, we rigorously tested prototypes in real-world Australian conditions—gravel, outback, and highways—making every adjustment count.

The final design features our patent-pending Lock Chock system, which securely clamps the front wheel for rock-solid hold, plus modular integration to carry up to two mountain bikes as well. Precision welding, Australian steel and aluminium, and an industrial-grade powder coat ensure a rack that’s tough, easy to use, and made to last. Each rack is certified to meet stringent engineering standards and professionally finished to withstand heavy, repeated use.

We’re proud to say the MOTO rack not only met, but exceeded, the original brief. It sets a new benchmark for safety, simplicity, and durability—delivering a genuinely better transport solution for Australian riders. By combining professional design execution, a rigorous local manufacturing process, and true innovation, we’ve created a product that’s as reliable as the adventures our customers chase.

Design Innovation

The Shingleback MOTO rack is a breakthrough in motorbike transport, solving the frustrations of traditional carriers with a series of world-first, user-centred innovations.

Conventional racks often demand awkward balancing and time-consuming tie-downs, leaving bikes less secure and riders more stressed. Shingleback’s solution changes the game. The patent-pending Lock Chock system is at the heart of the design, enabling genuine one-handed loading—simply roll the front wheel into the cradle and activate the mechanism for instant, rock-solid stability. This eliminates the uncertainty and struggle found in standard channel-and-strap systems, making loading safe and stress-free for all riders, including families and solo adventurers.

A standout, world-first innovation is the rack’s unique compatibility with the Shingleback 2B90 vertical bike rack. This allows users to transport a motorbike and up to two mountain bikes simultaneously on a single setup—something no other carrier offers. For active families and adventure seekers, this level of versatility is unmatched.

Thoughtful features extend to the adjustable channels for different bike sizes, rattle-free integrated ramp storage, and plug-and-play LED lighting for instant road compliance. The entire system is built from locally sourced materials, rigorously tested in real Australian conditions, and backed by Shingleback’s reputation for quality.

By listening to real user needs and reimagining what’s possible, the MOTO rack sets a new standard for safe, efficient, and versatile transport—proving that world-class, user-driven innovation can start right here in regional Victoria.

Circular / Sustainability Criteria

The Shingleback MOTO rack stands as a clear example of circular design and sustainable practice, with environmental responsibility integrated at every stage of development. From the outset, Shingleback’s design process aimed to minimise waste, extend product life, and reduce environmental impact—reflecting an authentic commitment to circular economy principles.

Locally sourced Australian steel and aluminium were selected not only for their strength and durability, but also for their recyclability and the reduced emissions associated with short supply chains.

Modular design is central: every major component is replaceable, repairable, or upgradable, allowing the rack to be maintained and adapted over many years, rather than replaced. This approach actively prevents premature obsolescence and encourages a culture of repair, supporting both customers and the environment.

Manufacturing occurs close to home, using efficient processes and recyclable packaging to further reduce the project’s carbon footprint. The industrial-grade powder coating delivers long-lasting protection with minimal environmental impact, eliminating the need for frequent recoating or replacement.

At end-of-life, the rack’s steel and aluminium components can be easily separated and recycled through existing waste streams, ensuring that valuable materials are kept in circulation.
