Kino Storage Drawer

Eva / Tom Shaw

The Kino Storage Drawer is the first in Australia that allows for a universal integration across multiple beds and sizes.

The design of the Kino Storage Drawer is the first in Australia that allows for a universal integration across multiple beds and sizes. This approach allows both past and present customers of Eva beds to add built-in drawers at any time, without needing size-specific versions or a whole new bed.

Design Brief:

Most under bed storage drawers are tied to specific bed sizes, requiring customers to buy size-specific drawers that are only available at the time of purchase. This can lock out customers from adding storage later, creating unnecessary production waste, and forcing customers to either go without integrated storage or replace their entire bed.

The Kino Storage Drawer is a universal design to fit Double, Queen and King sized Eva beds, irrespective of when they purchased their bed. A key challenge was retrofitting the drawer into existing Eva beds already in the market whilst also integrating into newer Eva beds.

Design Process

Kino Storage Drawer addresses this by developing a universal, tool-free system that fits double, queen, and king Eva beds, regardless of when the bed was purchased. This approach gives all Eva customers, past and present, the flexibility to add storage at any time without needing size-specific components or replacing their bed.

A key design challenge was engineering a mechanism that could securely connect to different-sized beds without tools, while maintaining a stable, high-quality feel. Roadblocks included ensuring the unit remained solid and creak-free once assembled, and a smooth opening and closing of drawers, especially on carpeted floors and under load.

Design Excellence

The Kino Storage Drawer was designed to allow both past and present customers of Eva beds to add drawers at any time, without needing size-specific versions or a whole new bed.  Designed in parallel with the Delve Bed and in consideration of the Eva Timber Bed, this approach enabled efficient material usage by incorporating timber offcuts to serve the other. It took a year to concept, develop, prototype and launch.

The drawers design seamlessly complements both timber and upholstered beds, maintaining visual continuity. User testing informed the push-to-open mechanism, accommodating users who prefer foot operation due to its ground-level positioning. Kino maximises under bed utility through a quadrant system allowing up to four drawers in any configuration. This flexibility lets users organise anything from small essentials to bulkier belongings like sports equipment.

The product meets all applicable safety standards, while push-to-open and soft-close mechanisms prevent component damage and finger injuries. Eva undertakes several rounds of user testing and quality control inspections ensuring  all joints align perfectly, with no visible gaps, uneven edges, or rough surfaces.

The drawer represents excellent value at its price point, having already yielded positive investment returns, with one in every two bed frames sold with a storage drawer. Environmental consciousness is demonstrated through timber offcut utilisation (responsibly sourced), eco-friendly packaging that diverts waste from landfills, and durable construction extending product life.

Premium materials and construction extend product longevity, while spare parts availability facilitates easy repairs during home relocations, enhancing both the drawers lifespan and the associated beds.

Design Innovation

The Kino Storage Drawer is the first built-in storage solution in Australia to be cross-compatible across different bed frame designs and sizes. The design introduces a compelling new value proposition where furniture can adapt to evolving customer requirements rather than being replaced, challenging industry norms around product obsolescence.

By allowing customers to add significant storage functionality to their current bedroom furniture, the Kino addresses a broader range of consumer needs while extending the useful life of existing products. This approach not only reduces waste but also transforms how consumers interact with and perceive the longevity of their furniture. Moreover, by continuing Evas no-tool-assembly promise, this broadens accessibility for all users of the product. Through these design principles, the Kino Storage Drawer sets a new benchmark for innovation by demonstrating how thoughtful product development can simultaneously address sustainability challenges, enhance user experience, and create additional value from existing consumer investments.

Design Impact

The Kino Storage Drawer delivers substantial long-term value to end-users, the environment, and the Eva brand, by thoughtfully extending the lifespan of existing Eva beds. This allows customers to enhance storage functionality without replacing their entire bed, directly supporting circular economy principles and reducing landfill waste.

The systems modular design accommodates up to four drawers, which can be configured as needs evolve and without needing to dispose perfectly functioning beds. End-users benefit through improved organisation in a time where there is a shift towards more compact living and a burgeoning need for more space-saving solutions. The push-to-open mechanism enhances physical well-being by making drawer access more comfortable and inclusive, particularly for users with mobility limitations.

Market performance metrics demonstrate positive business impact, with increased returning customer rates as existing Eva bed frame owners upgrade, while simultaneously attracting new customers who have storage needs. Environmental responsibility is embedded throughout the entire process. Timber offcuts from the Delve and Timber Beds are repurposed in construction, with all wood sourced from sustainably managed forests. The packaging utilises materials that are both recycled and recyclable, diverting waste from landfills.

Shipping has been optimised to minimise material usage and transportation footprint. Evas B-Corp certification ensures all suppliers meet stringent ethical standards, further strengthening the projects environmental credentials.

The Kino Storage Drawer establishes a new industry benchmark for sustainable, adaptable furniture that grows with customers needs, potentially inspiring broader adoption of modular design approaches that extend product lifespans across the furniture sector.

Circular / Sustainability Criteria

The Kino Storage Drawer extends the lifespan of Eva’s beds through a universal, modular storage solution. Commercially, Kino challenges industry norms by promoting adaptable furniture that grows with customers’ needs, while encouraging responsible consumption in the furniture market.

Environmentally, it allows Eva customers to easily add storage without replacing their bed, reducing waste and supporting circular design principles. Societally, its tool-free assembly and push-to-open functionality broaden accessibility, enabling those with limited mobility to access storage effortlessly without having to pull heavy drawers.

The shift towards more compact living spaces also underscores the need for more space-efficient solutions in the home.
