The Delve Bed Frame was designed to be the only upholstered bed you’ll ever need. Fully removable and machine-washable upholstery makes maintenance easy and updates to interiors hassle-free. With no-tool assembly and disassembly, it’s made to move with you easily from home to home.

Design Brief:

To break the cycle of buying new beds for small style changes or upholstery issues. Typically, upholstered beds can be difficult to maintain with fabric prone to stains or spills. They can often feel permanent, as upholstery cannot change styles or colours easily. Lastly, most are built as permanent fixtures, which doesn’t suit modern lifestyles where people move homes more frequently. Therefore, Eva set out to design a structurally sound upholstered bed with tool-free assembly, combined with easy-to-remove and easy-to-care-for upholstery.

Key challenges were meeting strict costs to deliver on competitive pricing, whilst innovating on materials.

This project was developed by:

Design Process

In two years, the team underwent three complete redesigns to create a tool-free, structurally sound, adaptable upholstered bed frame.

Through rigorous testing and sampling of materials, a machine-washable fabric cover system was developed to allow users to remove upholstery through simple hook and loop fasteners. Thus, enabling a whole new materiality from a simple change of covers.

The base was also developed to allow for future headboard interchangeability, further strengthening product longevity.

Core roadblocks were maintaining engineering integrity using only hand screws for a no-tool assembly and disassembly experience; and integrating with cross-product add-ons such as the Kino Storage Drawer.

Design Excellence

The vision for the Delve Bed Frame was a timeless, high-quality bed made for real life now and into the future.

Consumer insights highlighted key frustrations with traditional upholstered beds, such as difficulty with long-term maintenance and a general feeling of permanence that was at odds with the highly transient nature of todays households.

The frames clean lines and plush upholstery was inspired by the Eva Everyday Sofa and communicates comfort while maintaining visual lightness. Its form is well-balanced and resolved with removable upholstery to ensure a flexible and adaptable approach to any interior style.

In addition to removable and machine-washable upholstery, access to under-bed storage, easy drop-in storage drawers and an intuitive tool-free assembly suggests a highly functional consideration to the design.

The frame meets all applicable safety standards with robust construction, weight-tested stability, and smooth edges, particularly important for family homes. CNC manufacturing in the intelligent slat design also ensures a seamless, quality joinery.

The upholstered covers were stress-tested for washing durability and fabrics have also been OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and ISO 14001:2015 certified.

Commercially, by enabling easy fabric refreshes, it opens the market to a broader audience to now consider upholstery, which may have previously been seen as an impractical choice.

The designs modular nature also allows for easy component replacement, extending the product lifespan. By rethinking upholstery as interchangeable, the Delve Bed Frame reduces bulky furniture waste and prevents otherwise perfectly functional beds from ending up in landfill.

Design Innovation

The Delve Bed Frame establishes a new benchmark in flat-pack furniture design, representing not merely an evolution but a breakthrough in upholstered bedroom furniture.

By challenging the industrys reliance on static, resource-intensive construction, Delve employs Evas signature tool-free assembly system that eliminates misalignments, complicated tools, and disassembly challenges.

What sets Delve apart is its forward-thinking approach to furniture functionality. The frames unique storage system provides unrestricted access to the entire under-bed space, accommodating larger items that traditional designs cannot.

Users can also personalise their storage configuration with optional drawers, offering flexibility in bedroom organisation.

Delves future-proofed design enables interchangeable headboards, allowing users to refresh the beds aesthetic without replacing the entire frame. This modular approach promotes sustainability through longevity, ensuring the product evolves with changing tastes while reducing environmental impact.

The headboard incorporates comfort principles from Evas Everyday Sofa, optimised for comfortable sitting while in bed, a thoughtful enhancement to everyday functionality.

Meanwhile, the precision-engineered integrated slat system reduces material waste and increases manufacturing efficiency, with savings passed directly to consumers.

State-of-the-art CNC technology ensures seamless component compatibility across different production batches, guaranteeing seamless assembly.

This innovative approach delivers an accessible, durable product that sets a new precedent in responsible design. By prioritising user experience, sustainability, and adaptability, the Delve Bed Frame challenges conventional practices while offering tangible value, establishing a new standard for intelligent, future-oriented furniture design.

Design Impact

The Delve Bed Frame creates lasting positive impact through its human-centred design, sustainable practices, and business innovation.

For end-users, the frame enhances physical wellbeing through its robust support system (promoting better sleep quality) and ergonomically padded headboard (perfect for sitting in bed).

The innovative upward-sliding storage door panels eliminate awkward bending and lifting, improving accessibility while maximising under-bed space. This thoughtful functionality directly enhances users daily living experience and spatial optimisation in their homes.

Environmentally, Delve sets industry standards through multiple sustainable practices: CNC-nested cutting patterns that minimise plywood waste, certified recycled filling materials, timber sourced exclusively from responsibly managed forests, and fabrics with recycled content.

The space-optimised packaging reduces shipping emissions, while the tool-free assembly eliminates hardware waste and simplifies disassembly for relocation or recycling.

The removable, washable covers extend product lifespan significantly, allowing users to refresh their bedroom aesthetics without furniture replacement. This represents a fundamental shift from the disposable furniture paradigm toward more sustainable consumption patterns.

Thus, buying once and buying well.

For Eva, this strengthens brand loyalty by delivering on their ethical promise as a certified B-Corp that engages only with suppliers meeting stringent standards.

The products versatility and longevity increase customer satisfaction and positive word-of-mouth, expanding market reach.

As a design exemplar, Delve demonstrates that uncompromised comfort, functionality, and style can coexist with environmental responsibility.

By setting this new benchmark, it inspires industry-wide movement toward more thoughtful, sustainable product development, ultimately contributing to a more considered furniture landscape.
