Blackmagic PYXIS Broadcast Kit

Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic PYXIS Broadcast Kit is an expansion package that transforms Blackmagic PYXIS into a versatile ‘run-and-gun’ camera for ENG work.

Blackmagic PYXIS Broadcast Kit is an expansion package designed to transform Blackmagic PYXIS into a versatile ‘run and gun’ camera for ENG (Electronic News Gathering) and documentary work. It consists of an ergonomic side grip and top handle with integrated HD OLED viewfinder and high quality stereo microphone.

Design Brief:

Independent creators, small enterprises and novices face several challenges when shooting professional ENG content, including limited access to high-quality, affordable equipment and the physical demands of handheld shooting.

Complex camera rigs can be intimidating and impractical, especially in challenging, unpredictable live scenarios. Budget constraints force compromises in audio, stability or image quality.

Inadequate ergonomics in makeshift solutions can lead to fatigue and hinder responsiveness. These barriers make it difficult to achieve professional broadcast-standard outputs without extensive resources or experience, limiting opportunities for responsive impactful journalism, especially in underrepresented or remote communities.

Design Process

Design is integrated throughout Blackmagic Design’s entire development cycle, leveraged at every stage of the creation process, collaboratively and fluidly across disciplines.

Hardware and software are developed in unison, informing each other dynamically to create consistent, memorable experiences across various product categories.

This non-linear process also drives product cycles that are faster, more flexible and more efficient than many other brands in the space.

On-going consultation with industry leaders and extensive observation of the ways in which people work and the environments they operate in allows us to deliver more carefully considered, empathetic solutions attuned to specific workflow needs.

Design Excellence

Informed by extensive ergonomic study and epitomised by precision detailing and a refined haptic experience, the PYXIS Pro Handle and Grip pair seamlessly with the purposeful DNA of Blackmagic PYXIS digital film cameras.

When combined, the impression is a cohesive camera system, in which the accessories are seen as integral rather than an awkward afterthought.

PYXIS PRO HANDLE
Demonstrating a seamless continuity between disparate functional elements, the Blackmagic PYXIS Pro Handle is a powerful accessory that brings digital film quality to broadcast and television production.

An integrated electronic viewfinder enables intuitive and accurate outdoors and handheld shooting, with a vivid HD OLED display with built-in proximity sensor and a bespoke, 4 element glass dioptre for incredible optical accuracy.

Users can reference the digital focus chart to ensure precise viewfinder focus setup, while interrogating frame guides and other critical status information. The angle of the EVF can be easily adjusted to allow for shooting from various angles and positions.

Isolated from the main enclosure, the professional stereo microphone has an ultra-low noise floor for exceptional audio in the most challenging locations. Paired with professional audio connections on Blackmagic PYXIS cameras, it allows the recording of separate audio tracks without an external mixer.

PYXIS PRO GRIP
A video style side grip for broadcast production with Blackmagic PYXIS cameras. It incorporates a padded, adjustable hand strap for secure and comfortable shooting with record button and assignable zoom rocker right at the user’s fingertips for instinctive, blind operation.

Design Innovation

Driven by comprehensive anthropometric data and field research, the EVF in PYXIS Pro Handle copes with the wide physical variations of a diverse range of users.

Dampened for precise adjustment, the four element glass dioptre assembly can be tuned to compensate for variable eyesight.

A smart infra-red proximity sensor detects user presence near the eyepiece, turning on the OLED when required, and shutting it down when no longer in use. This prevents long-term deterioration of the OLED screen and prolongs valuable battery life – especially critical in challenging remote locations.

Paired with precision glass optics, the 1920x1080 colour OLED display is so sharp it is virtually impossible to see individual pixels. Such clarity of detail is vital in high pressure shoots where accurate focus and framing are essential for professional results.

A fraction of the size of traditional optical systems, the OLED display ensures an ultra-compact, lightweight design for comfort and balance on sustained shooting sessions.

Design Impact

Designed for speed, stability, and comfort, the PYXIS Broadcast kit empowers independent filmmakers, journalists and documentarians, enabling high-end handheld shooting in unpredictable, real-world environments.

In a media landscape where speed, authenticity and accessibility matter more than ever, it supports more inclusive, agile approaches to news gathering, amplifying local perspectives and enabling timely, high-quality coverage of global events.

Enhancing the functionality and versatility of PYXIS cameras, the PYXIS Broadcast kit allows maximises user investment by expanding the camera’s utility across news, documentary, event coverage and run-and-gun filmmaking.

This adaptability reduces the need for multiple cameras, promoting both economic and environmental sustainability.

Ergonomically refined and built for field resilience, the PYXIS Broadcast Kit promotes a more responsive, inclusive media landscape and exemplifies the impact of design through versatility.

Bridging the gap between high-end cinema and fast-paced field work, it democratises access to high-end broadcast technology.

Reducing fatigue and enhancing stability, it offers independent journalists and agile production teams intuitive, instinctive control on the move, allowing them to stay focussed on their story – not their equipment.
