Joolca - GottaGo Modular Separating Toilet

Tricycle Developments / Joolca

Through collaborative design and rigorous testing, Joolca’s GottaGo Modular Separating Toilet enhances outdoor comfort, extends adventures, and reduces environmental impact.

Joolca, a distinguished market innovator, have established themselves as a creator of comfort for the great outdoors. The Joolca GottaGo Modular Separating Toilet is the culmination of a collaborative design process and thorough testing. This groundbreaking modular toilet enables adventurers to prolong their outdoor experiences whilst reducing their ecological footprint.

Design Brief:

Embracing the great outdoors is marred by inadequate waste disposal solutions, crucial for preserving nature. Traditional portable toilets, with their odours, frequent maintenance needs, and ergonomic flaws, fail to meet the dynamic demands of the traveller. They lack versatility for different travel styles, often resulting in unsafe carry loads and environmental concerns.

This project was developed by:

Design Process

The Joolca GottaGo emerges from in-depth research as a modular separating toilet that effectively divides solid waste from liquid. It offers three environmentally friendly options for solid waste management: biodegradable chemicals, bags, or composting, allowing it to be tailored to the user’s travel mode. The separation system prevents solid and liquid waste mixing, making it easier and safer to dispose of than traditional camping toilets whilst also reducing the odour that is a result of that mixing. The result is a reduction in the weight of solid waste, enhancing ergonomic handling. Moreover, its airtight and leak-proof design eliminates odours.

Key features of the design include:

  • Durability: Designed, engineered and tested to survive the rigours of outdoor use.
  • Extended Use: Separates solids from liquids, reducing the frequency of emptying and associated odours from waste mixing.
  • Versatile Waste Management: Accommodates three waste disposal methods: chemical, bag, or composting.
  • Odour Control: Separation of waste types minimises unpleasant smells.
  • Swappable Cassette: Offers flexibility for solid waste disposal while travelling.
  • Smart Bagging System: Simplifies the process of sealing and disposing of waste bags.
  • Back-Friendly Design: Easier to empty compared to traditional camping toilets.
  • Airtight & Leak Proof: Ensures odourless and spill-free operation.
  • Non-Flush Cleaning: A simple water/vinegar spray keeps the bowl clean.
  • Level Sensors: Alerts users when it’s time to empty the toilet.
  • Complete Hygiene Kit: Includes all necessary equipment for use and stores internally in the main compartment.
  • Secure Solids Seal: Features an integrated locking mechanism.
  • Durable Mechanism: Metal-reinforced slide gate and accessory rail for longevity.
  • Break-Resistant Hinges: Designed to detach safely under excessive force.
  • Multiple Seals: Provides airtight sealing during use and transport.

Design Excellence

The GottaGo boasts a hygienic design that instils confidence and convenience in users. Its discreet appearance, accentuated by Joolca’s signature brand colours, presents a robust and reliable solution capable of withstanding the demands of camping, off-roading, and boating.

The GottaGo’s design allows for extended stays in nature, alleviating concerns over toilet capacity and illegal waste disposal. It offers an ergonomic alternative to traditional camping toilets, addressing common issues such as odours and leaks by including well-engineered seals and gaskets.

The Joolca camping toilet is engineered with user safety and convenience at its core. Weighing in at just 7.7kg when empty, it’s designed for effortless portability. Splitting the solids and liquids into smaller, modular cassettes with integrated handles makes disposal much easier to manage for a single person.

The team meticulously analysed anthropometric data and conducted comparative studies of competitor and domestic products to develop the seat and bowl architecture. This approach has resulted in an ergonomic design that ensures comfort and ease of use, setting a new benchmark in the industry for safety and user experience in portable sanitation solutions.

The GottaGo is the result of rigorous mechanical testing, utilising durable LLDPE for rotomolded components and high-quality engineering plastics for injection-moulded parts. Stainless steel is employed at high-contact points to ensure longevity and reliability.

Positioned as a premium product, the GottaGo is priced to be accessible to a broad market. Following the rapid sell-out of its initial pre-order batch, production is now being scaled up to meet the overwhelming demand.

Design Innovation

Co-Design Research - Uncovering need & opportunities Embarking on toilet development was uncharted territory for Joolca. Extensive research was essential to understand market demands, functional requirements, and differentiation opportunities.

The research approach included customer-based insights created through interviews, surveys, and co-design workshops with potential users. These interactions revealed how the toilet would fit into users’ lifestyles and illuminated critical human factors requirements.

In parallel, research streams explored peer-reviewed articles and comparative product reviews. The goal was to identify gaps and create a unique selling proposition.

This design research uncovered a gap in the market and created an ambitious design brief: develop a modular separating toilet that addressed existing ergonomic issues faced by users.

Proof of Concept - Testing theories quickly

Many desired features had never graced the camping sector. The design team swiftly tested theories during the concept stage, through visual assets and the creation of ergonomic proof-of-concept prototypes.

The objective was to test the usability, ergonomics, and handling of the product through real-world usage and testing, rather than theoretical simulation. For example, this process was critical for investigating the validity of the waste separating concept, a unique layout that is essential for minimising odours, improving usability, and allowing for longer off-grid usage.

Design Impact

The Joolca GottaGo Camping Toilet has resonated with both local and international markets, exceeding sales forecasts and necessitating an expansion in production to meet the surging demand. This innovative product has not only carved out a new niche in the market but has also solidified Joolca’s reputation as a pioneer in enhancing outdoor living comforts.

The design of this camping toilet extends the duration of outdoor stays, deepening users’ connection with nature and promoting environmental stewardship. It offers a practical solution to manage waste responsibly, ensuring outdoor experiences remain pristine and enjoyable.

The development of this product is grounded in comprehensive design research, collaborative design efforts, and extensive product testing. The success of the Joolca camping toilet stands as a testament to the value of professional design practices in creating products that fulfil market needs and enhance consumer experiences.
