Blackmagic URSA Cine EVF

Blackmagic Design

Offering crystal clear focus and framing, URSA Cine EVF is a professional electronic viewfinder designed for Blackmagic digital film cameras.

URSA Cine EVF is a professional electronic viewfinder designed specifically for Blackmagic digital film cameras. It offers crystal clear focus and framing from its ultra-sharp 1920 x 1080 colour OLED display, a modular design and quick-release mounting kit that enables it to adapt to a range of shooting scenarios.

Design Brief:

Optical viewfinder systems typically deliver the most accurate image, due to the ‘infinite’ resolution of directly projected light. Such systems require a complex array of lenses and mirrors, constrained by ultra-fine tolerances. This makes them difficult to assemble, sensitive to incidental impact, and highly expensive, some costing over $8000.

Additional challenges can be found in the variety of ways filmmakers shoot. Depending on the scene, location or composition such approaches may include:

  • Low perspective, handheld ‚run-and-gun‘ action shots.
  • Carefully framed low-light, tripod mounted angles.
  • Shoulder mounted shooting, common to news gathering.
  • Gimbal or drone mounting for expansive panoramas.

This project was developed by:

  • Blackmagic Design

Design Process

The pixels in URSA Cine EVF’s 1920 x 1080 colour OLED display are virtually invisible to the naked eye, resulting in images indistinguishable from optical systems. Self-contained, the viewfinder is easy to assemble, compact and inexpensive. For $1695, independent filmmakers and local broadcasters can now leverage Hollywood standards of professional focus and framing.

Inspired by exhaustive field research and anthropomorphic study, it pairs with a dynamic, lightweight, quick-release mounting system built from aircraft grade CNC Machined aluminium. Running on adjustable carbon fibre mounting rods, this caters to almost every conceivable shooting position for on-going comfort and maximum creative freedom.

Design Excellence

Typified by precision detailing and a refined haptic experience, URSA Cine EVF is designed to fit seamlessly with the tactical, high performance DNA of Blackmagic URSA Cine and PYXIS digital film cameras. The result is a visual narrative in which the viewfinder is seen as an integral, essential element of the overall camera system, rather than an awkward afterthought.

To this end, the athletic form of the URSA Cine EVF was carefully refined for optimal size and camera integration. The compact, precision CNC machined aluminium chassis and rigid polycarbonate carbon fibre composite enclosure are strong and light, fitting comfortably in hand for easy adjustability. Function keys are located for blind location and are backlit for use in dark environments. Keys have tactile features for accurate activation without shifting focus from the display. A proximity sensor activates the display only when a user approaches, conserving power for when it is required.

Viewfinder Arm

With mounting brackets constructed from CNC machined aluminium and running on carbon fibre rails, the URSA Cine EVF arm and extension kit offers the maximum ergonomic flexibility for a range of shooting positions. Quick-release rail locks and a proprietary dovetail mounting system can be quickly set up, adjusted and stripped down and guarantees compatibility with a wide range of camera platforms and future accessories like monitors and microphones. Dampened rotation axis offers smooth and accurate positioning, while the sliding rail extension arm has a large range of movement to accommodate various shooting angles and either left or right eye dominant users.

Design Innovation

Led by comprehensive anthropometric study, the URSA Cine EVF is flexible enough to cope with wide physical variation in a diverse user base. Dampened for precise adjustment, the Dioptre wheel controls a bespoke, four element glass dioptre assembly that can be tuned to compensate for variable eyesight

A smart infra-red proximity sensor detects user presence near the eyepiece, turning on the OLED when required, and shutting it down when no longer in use. This prevents long-term deterioration of the OLED screen and prolongs valuable battery life – especially critical in challenging remote locations.

Paired with precision glass optics, the 1920x1080 colour OLED display is so sharp it is virtually impossible to see individual pixels. Such clarity of detail is vital in high pressure shoots where accurate focus and framing are essential for professional results. A fraction of the size of traditional optical systems, the OLED display ensures an ultra-compact, lightweight design for comfort and balance on sustained shooting sessions.

Design Impact

With a user-focused empathetic design, peerless quality and professional feature set, the URSA Cine EVF reinforces Blackmagic Design’s ethos of providing creative individuals with professional, affordable video technology attuned to their specific workflows.

The opportunity to realize truly design-led, inclusive products such as the URSA Cine Viewfinder is a great privilege. Developing democratising products that empower users has a powerful effect on staff morale, engendering a tightly knit team spirit.

As a company, we are consistently inspired by the diverse and highly creative things people do with our products. As Blackmagic Design continues to facilitate this by making high-end technology accessible to the mass market, we are driven to continue making design decisions informed by a considered approach to new and innovative materials, engineering approaches and manufacturing processes.
