Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K

Blackmagic Design

Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K is a revolutionary digital film camera pairing Hollywood image quality with full integration in post-production workflows.

Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K is a revolutionary digital film camera pairing Hollywood image quality with full integration in the post-production process. Designed specifically to transform the workflows of high-end cinematography, television and documentaries, it introduces Blackmagic’s first proprietary, full frame 12K sensor and is the world’s first such camera with fast, high capacity storage built-in.

Design Brief:

Professional cinematographers face an array of practical challenges when producing high-end film and television, not least of which is the rapid acceleration of image sensor technology and the ever-increasing demand for high resolution, high frame rate outputs and the creative opportunities they afford.

As image quality increases however, so too does the burden to efficiently capture, store and subsequently edit vast amounts of video data. With an unprecedented demand for content from global streaming giants fuelling increasingly aggressive timelines, filmmakers need video technology that not only captures Hollywood image quality footage, but also facilitates more efficient, collaborative, non-linear production workflows.

Design Process

Blackmagic URSA Cine 12K is designed to meet the demands of any high end production. With a compact, lightweight and balanced camera body and a full frame open gate 12K image sensor, it is the first digital film camera with ultra-fast high capacity Cloud Store technology built in. The removable Blackmagic Media Module is fast, rugged and includes a massive 8TB of storage, allowing users to record at the highest resolutions and frame rates for over four hours while accessing files directly over high speed 10G Ethernet.

Design Excellence

Form
The uncompromising visual narrative of URSA Cine 12K is a purposeful response to the functional demands of high-end cinematography, inspiring confidence in demanding production environments. Typified by tapered surfaces, defined work zones and exposed fixings, it balances durability and performance with a compact form that minimises perceived bulk. Raised areas convey intuitive interface clusters, while smaller tactile cues of form and materiality aid blind operation, allowing operators to focus solely on capturing each shot.
All keys and switches are protected by the enclosure or flush with the camera body’s surface to eliminate the risk of accidental activation or damage, while industry standard professional connectors are used for maximum compatibility.

Function
With interchangeable lens mounts, upgradeable media modules and high performance thermal management system, the scalable architecture of URSA Cine 12K makes it highly versatile on set, but also allows it to evolve on pace with new technology developments. This significantly prolongs the camera body’s life, safeguarding user investment.

Quality
The lightweight magnesium alloy spaceframe, paired with Carbon fibre composite panels create a very rigid and tough exterior, and ensures critical components fit precisely, enhancing the high-end sense of quality. Other critical structural elements such as the shoulder and lens mounts are forged and CNC machined aluminium and stainless steel, machined to extremely high tolerances.

Commerciality
Very few systems currently available compare to URSA Cine 12K in regards to specification, but at $14,995 it still costs just a third of its closest rivals, democratising the very cutting edge of professional filmmaking technology.

Design Innovation

Blackmagic Media Modules

URSA Cine 12K is the first digital film camera with ultra-fast high capacity Cloud Store technology built in. The removable Blackmagic Media Module houses 4 cutting edge 2TB M.2 cards for a massive 8TB of storage, enabling high speed continuous recording at the highest resolutions and frame rates for over 4 hours. Each module has integrated thermal management features that effectively dissipate heat and ensure ongoing stability.

The optional Blackmagic Media Module CF, which offers dual CFexpress slots enables users to leverage their existing storage media. The module can be easily removed from the camera and loaded into a Blackmagic Media Dock for transferring media to a network or to Blackmagic Cloud for instant global collaboration.

Built in Live Streaming
URSA Cine 12K features a built in hardware streaming engine that supports streaming to major platforms or directly to clients via Ethernet, high speed Wi-Fi or even 4G or 5G mobile networks. This means stakeholders and post-production teams, regardless of their location around the globe, can now monitor shoots remotely in real time.

Cutting Edge Image Sensor
URSA Cine features a revolutionary new sensor designed for incredible image quality images at all resolutions up to a massive 12K. The larger sensor features larger photo-sites leading to an astounding 16 stops of dynamic range for peerless spectrum of detail.

To reliably facilitate this, critical imaging components are first mounted to the rigid, highly precise internal magnesium alloy chassis, before being individually shimmed and calibrated. Protected by a carbon fibre polycarbonate composite enclosure, the chassis is designed to absorb impacts while maintaining dimensional integrity for on-going performance.

Design Impact

A challenge for any production is the high capital investment required for the professional capture, post-production and distribution of professional cinematic content. High-end camera systems typically cost over $50,000 just for a camera body. After adding numerous monitoring and recording accessories required in order to start shooting, budgets can run over $100,000. This makes it impossible for independent filmmakers to own high-end equipment, forced instead to rely on ad-hoc, second-hand rentals or inferior technology.

The affordable URSA Cine 12K has the potential to have a transformative effect on the way aspiring filmmakers work, not only because it is accessible but because it allows people to collaborate more flexibly, efficiently and cost effectively without compromising the quality of their output. By providing a self-contained set of production tools, and connecting film crews on set in real-time to creative post-production teams anywhere via Blackmagic Cloud, URSA Cine 12K minimises the need for large on-set crews and the cost and logistics it entails.

Connecting seamlessly via Blackmagic Cloud, users are simultaneously introduced to the broader Blackmagic Design ecosystem, specifically the DaVinci Resolve suite of post-production software, which comes free with URSA Cine 12K. This drives sales through multiple product categories which further diversify revenue streams for secure profitability.

This universal design approach, in which disparate products are developed concurrently with each other, along with the intuitive, professional commonality of experiences between physical interfaces, software platforms and GUIs drives the seamless interoperability that inspires business growth and on-going customer loyalty to the Blackmagic brand.
