Blackmagic Media Dock

Blackmagic Design

Designed specifically for aspiring Hollywood filmmakers, Blackmagic Media Dock is a high-speed file transfer device that accelerates professional post-production workflows.

The Blackmagic Media Dock is a high-speed file transfer device that accelerates professional post-production workflows. Designed specifically for aspiring Hollywood filmmakers, it allows the instantaneous transfer of massive, high resolution video files directly from Blackmagic cameras to collaborators and stakeholders anywhere around the world.

Design Brief:

Hollywood and global streaming platforms like Apple+, Netflix and Amazon Prime continue to drive a seemingly insatiable demand for more immersive cinematic experiences, leading to an exponential acceleration in image sensor technology and subsequent leaps in image quality, resolution and framerates.

Traditional media storage is generally embedded in digital film cameras, unable to be changed to keep pace with changing media formats developed to cope with massive increases in file size. Requiring constant media replacement simply to continue recording, this also results in workflow bottle necks on set, and difficulties when sharing files with post-production teams and other remote collaborators.

Design Process

The Blackmagic Media Dock is an integral part of a revolutionary production workflow that offers editors, colourists and other collaborators real-time access to high-end video footage as soon as it is shot, from anywhere in the world. By mounting up to three high capacity Blackmagic Media Modules users have simultaneous, high speed access to media from multiple URSA Cine cameras. Four high speed 10G Ethernet ports allow up to four separate editing workstations to connect directly, maintaining performance even with multiple users connected at the same time.

Design Excellence

Designed to fit in a standard 19” equipment rack, the Blackmagic Media Dock is an understated but professional presence in any studio environment, aligning seamlessly with the uncompromising aesthetics of URSA Cine 12K.

Paired back to just the essential visual elements, the subtle surface variations and tactile cues are driven by critical functional requirements and integration within the URSA Cine production workflow.

Three LED light rings surround each docking bay, remaining almost invisible until vividly illuminated to display the state of a loaded module. Integrated latch & handle prevents the removal of media module while connected. The latch actuates a micro switch, which disconnects the signal & prevents data corruption.

The transverse thermal management system can quietly dissipate heat away from modules or accelerate the airflow in demanding situations where greater heat dispersion is required.

Spring-loaded inner doors shut off airflow to vacant bays to ensure optimal cooling for active drives. These also prevent ingress of dust and water in challenging environments.

Polished venting fins below each bay provide constant, reliable airflow to the module’s omnidirectional heatsink, maintaining optimal performance despite significant processing demands.

Media bays are meticulously tuned and engineering to ensure smooth insertion of media modules, with bespoke locking mechanism for secure retainment, even in transportation.

Exported to 87 countries, it complies with all relevant safety standards and regulations, including AS/NZS 60950, FCC, CE, RCM, WEE, ROHS and UL.

Design Innovation

Blackmagic Media Dock

Never before has it been possible to move such a high volume of data so efficiently from a camera on location to editors and post-production teams. The Blackmagic Media Dock facilitates a more dynamic, non-linear creative process in which cinematographers and post-production teams can inform each other fluidly throughout all stages of a production, leading to innovative outputs and more efficient production schedules.

Blackmagic Media Modules
A proprietary format designed specifically for integration with URSA Cine 12K, the ultra-fast, high capacity Blackmagic Media Module is the first interchangeable storage solution. With a universal PCIe connection offering almost limitless future upgrade potential, it currently houses 4 cutting edge 2TB M.2 cards for a massive 8TB of storage, enabling high speed continuous recording at maximum resolutions and frame rates for over 4 hours.

Such high-end performance generates large amounts of potentially damaging heat. Each Media Module is integrated with a forged, omni-directional heatsink with embedded copper heat pipe for even dissipation of heat and ongoing stability.

The optional Blackmagic Media Module CF, which offers dual CFexpress slots enables users to leverage their existing storage media. The module can be easily removed from the camera and loaded into a Blackmagic Media Dock for transferring media to a network or to Blackmagic Cloud for instant global collaboration.

The flexible architecture of the system ensures that almost any future storage media technology developments can be quickly and easily integrated into the design and incorporated into the Blackmagic Design production workflow.

Design Impact

Safeguarding the Investment of Creative Professionals One of the major barriers to any aspiring filmmaker is the cost involved in establishing the suite of professional tools required to produce high-end content. The pace of video technology development and the obsolescence that accompanies these cycles only exacerbate this issue.

While it has the potential to revolutionise the creative process and accelerate video production efficiency, Blackmagic Media Dock also safeguards user investment in URSA Cine cameras indefinitely, by providing a high performance storage platform and transfer portal that can easily and affordably adapt to future technology without the need to upgrade the camera itself.

A critical element in the Blackmagic Design production chain, it also acts as an important hub between movie sets and post-production teams. Connecting effortlessly via high-speed ethernet or Blackmagic Cloud, users are simultaneously introduced to the broader Blackmagic Design ecosystem of products, specifically the DaVinci Resolve suite of post-production software. This helps drive sales through multiple product categories which further diversify revenue streams for secure profitability.

This universal design approach, in which disparate products are developed alongside each other, along with the intuitive, professional commonality of experiences between physical interfaces, software platforms and GUIs drives the seamless interoperability that inspires business growth and on-going customer loyalty to the Blackmagic brand.
