Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel

Blackmagic Design

DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel is the world’s first wireless professional colour grading control surface.

DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel is the world’s first wireless professional colour grading control surface. Designed in collaboration with the world’s leading colourists and just $495 it can be used virtually anywhere, empowering users with the same technology used on Oscar-winning blockbusters like Oppenheimer, Poor Things and Godzilla Minus One.

Design Brief:

The predominance of streaming services like Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+, who now host audiences in excess of 200 million worldwide, continues to drive expansion of cinematic experiences outside the movie theatre and into the comfort and convenience of living rooms and mobile devices. Keeping pace with this growing demand for content means that filmmakers and TV producers must face increasingly aggressive deadlines. Traditional production methods, in which shooting, editing, colour grading and audio mixing occur in sequential order, are now too slow and becoming outdated. A new solution was required to facilitate a more fluid creative process.

Design Process

The ultra-compact DaVinci Resolve Color Panel untethers Hollywood quality colour grading from the fixed studio environment. Connected to an iPad via Bluetooth and powered by an integrated battery, users have dynamic, direct control over multiple parameters simultaneously, allowing them to work faster in the most challenging of situations.

Through Blackmagic Cloud, proxy files from Blackmagic cameras can be edited and graded the instant they are captured. This allows directors to make artistic decisions immediately on set, informing subsequent shots to culminate in a more collaborative, non-linear creative process and optimised production efficiency.

Design Excellence

Form & Function
Every aesthetic detail on the DaVinci Resolve Micro Color Panel has been designed with efficiency and portability in mind:

Angled towards the user for comfortable ergonomics the slim, tapered form and low profile control elements allow it pack easily into a backpack or laptop bag.

The smooth, rounded underside offers comfortable use on a user’s lap in a confined space like a plane.

Main control surface possesses a fine texture to minimise reflections in darkened environments and provide contrast to critical controls such as the high gloss trackballs.

iPad slot is tuned for optimal stability, with a display angle that minimises reflections. The flared central area of the slot is sculpted to provide clearance to easily perform swipe gestures on a docked iPad.

Quality
Delivering a variable rotational accuracy of less than half a degree, each of the twelve primary adjustment controls possesses a contactless, high-accuracy magnetic field encoder, which are incredibly durable due to the absence of physical contact between precision CNC machined shaft and encoding chip.

Bespoke, individually illuminated scissor switches are lighter and more responsive than traditional silicone keypads. Featuring an innovative transparent mechanism that provides the user with active mode feedback, LED illumination can be user defined to cope with bright outdoor or dark studio settings.

Commerciality
At $495 the DaVinci Resolve Color Panel is one of the world’s least expensive colour grading control surfaces, making it accessible to virtually anyone, unlocking a vast potential market of emerging independent content creators.

Design Innovation

Blackmagic Cloud
Powered for up to eight hours by internal battery and connected to an iPad Pro via integrated Bluetooth, the DaVinci Resolve Color Panel frees colourists from traditionally inflexible studio environments. Leveraging the DaVinci Resolve for iPad app, users can remotely access proxy files uploaded to Blackmagic Cloud, allowing grading of massive 12K video files from Blackmagic cameras like URSA Cine 12K the instant they are captured. This non-linear workflow enables on-going, iterative refinements which greatly streamline production efficiency.

Peerless Direct Control
Each of the three bespoke trackball and ring assemblies have been meticulously engineered to deliver the level of performance demanded by Hollywood professionals.
The weight of each has been tuned to provide the perfect amount of inertia for both fine and dramatic adjustments alike.

  • 40mm diameter offers the ideal balance between performance and portability.
  • Material formulation is specifically developed to balance sensor fidelity with smooth operation.
  • lluminated by an advanced Infra-Red Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser, the trackball surface is coated with nanoparticles that allow the IR sensor to read the surface at up to 762mm per second, enabling infinitesimally fine adjustments.
  • Held securely for transport, trackballs can be easily removed for cleaning.
  • Ergonomically shaped for single-handed use, each ring has a short vertical surface for thumb edge traction.
  • Unique, helical surface pattern offers effortless grip and refined fingertip control.
  • Dampened stainless steel ball bearings provide smooth, precise movement.
  • Quadrature optical interrupter sensors offer high resolution output for minute adjustments.

Design Impact

Blackmagic’s holistic application of design throughout its business is integral to its core philosophy of providing creative people, at every experience level, with affordable yet highly professional video technology.

Launched in April 2024 at just $495, the DaVinci Resolve Color Panel is one of the world’s most affordable colour grading control surfaces, making it accessible to virtually anyone. This means a vast new market of up-and-coming independent content creators can now leverage the same colour grading technology previously only enjoyed by Hollywood professionals.

Affordability alone does not drive business success and brand loyalty. This must be earnt through positive and lasting user experiences, beginning with dependable build quality, natural ergonomics and sophisticated performance exceeding expectations.

Connecting seamlessly via Blackmagic Cloud, new users are simultaneously introduced to the broader Blackmagic Design ecosystem of products, specifically Blackmagic cameras such as URSA Cine 12K and PYXIS 6K, driving sales through multiple product categories which further diversify revenue streams for secure profitability.

This universal design approach, in which disparate products are developed concurrently with each other, along with the intuitive, professional commonality of experiences between physical interfaces, software platforms and GUIs drives the seamless interoperability that inspires business growth and on-going customer loyalty to the Blackmagic brand.
