Blackmagic ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20

Blackmagic Design

A live video production control panel designed to enhance the efficiency of large scale sporting events, concerts and TV broadcasts.

ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 is the latest addition to the world’s most innovative live video production control panel range. Designed specifically to enhance the efficiency of large scale sporting events, concerts and TV broadcasts it costs just $3899, pairing affordability with the speed and consistency of physical control.

Design Brief:

The excessive cost of most large-scale switcher control systems is a significant barrier to smaller broadcasters producing truly professional large-scale live broadcasts. Cumbersome and complicated, most require expert desk installation in a studio, and are unsuitable for independent operations that must remain agile, moving quickly between locations on tight budgets and strict schedules. Cheap software-based systems are complicated and difficult to navigate; in fast-paced, unpredictable live scenarios such inefficiency could be the difference between an absorbing broadcast and a failure.

Design Process

Driven by real-world insight into live broadcast workflows ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 distils control of 20 video inputs into a clear physical control layout, placing every feature directly at user’s fingertips. This eliminates time-consuming navigation of complex GUIs for reliable, real-time control over transitions and digital video effects. Bespoke switcher buttons, with smooth scalloped caps reduce distracting reflections, offering positive tactile engagement for error-free blind operation.

Paired with an ATEM Switcher it is a versatile solution for complex, high-pressure live productions demanding long hours of concentration and an ability to react instinctively to unexpected events and changing conditions.

With the powerful, portable ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 costing just $3,899, Blackmagic Design continues to democratise large-scale live broadcast technology, offering direct control through an intuitive physical interface. No longer required to compromise creativity, performance or efficiency, individuals, institutions and novices are empowered to explore innovative approaches to live broadcasting regardless of the location or scale of the broadcast. This has meaningful benefits, as it allows more users to access large-scale switcher control technology, thus enabling more innovative ideas to be expressed in a professional manner, unconstrained by inferior technology.

Design Excellence

Form

The pared back visual narrative draws directly upon efficient, logical live switching workflows. In a dark studio or outside broadcast van, the main enclosure retreats from view, leaving nothing but the back-lit control elements in sharp focus. This allows operators to focus on their craft rather than their equipment, responding instinctively and reliably to rapid instructions from demanding directors.

Function

ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 is an empathetic response to live scenarios demanding long hours of concentration. Informed by best-practice live switching workflows, each element was carefully assessed, optimised and meticulously arranged into a rational, hierarchical layout. Smooth, scalloped switcher buttons reduce distracting reflections common to traditional buttons, while providing comfortable, positive engagement for error-free operation.

With each critical switcher function positioned for instant activation ATEM 1 M/E Advanced panel 20 drastically improves the efficiency of live broadcast workflows. Users can switch intuitively between 20 video inputs via broadcast quality switcher buttons, ergonomically formed for optimal engagement and error-free blind operation.

Quality

The aircraft grade CNC machined aluminium control surface and all-metal construction facilitates excellent structural integrity and accuracy for consistent location of controls, ensuring failsafe reliability in challenging situations. It simultaneously improves usability and perceived quality, while providing the tactical durability professional broadcasters demand.

Commerciality

Powerful and intuitive, ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 acts as a conduit to other Blackmagic product categories. Working seamlessly and reliably together, meaningful and lasting connections with professional customers are continuously created and reinforced, driving brand loyalty and broader distribution of sales through multiple channels. This subsequently ensures stable, business-wide profitability that is not dependent on a single revenue source.

Design Innovation

In order to produce compelling large-scale live broadcasts a range of perspectives are required to tell a complete and engaging story of the event. Multiple cameras, often separated by vast distances, must be placed into a variety of distinct situations, each with their own challenges. Be it a Micro Studio Camera capturing intimate close-ups of an artist, or an URSA Broadcast Camera delivering sweeping panoramas of a sporting arena, each source has a unique angle on the event in which focal points, movement and lighting conditions may vary drastically.

The role of the producer is to consider the visual and technical nuances of each of these sources while responding instinctively to changing conditions and unfolding events. Creative choices must be made decisively, cutting between live video feeds and pre-recorded content while simultaneously applying transitions, replays and digital video effects.

The rational design of the ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 is unlike any other switcher control panel. Its clean, logical layout streamlines complex live broadcasting procedures into a familiar, highly efficient workflow for experienced operators, and presents novice users with a non-threatening, approachable interface that invites discovery and learning. This is supported by automated software routines that respond intuitively to user actions. As functions are activated physically on the panel, the relevant parameters are automatically displayed on one of two integrated 5 inch LCD system control monitors allowing instant adjustments without time-consuming GUI navigation.

Design Impact

The ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 is an important element in the ecosystem of Blackmagic Design professional live broadcast products. Its approachable interface and responsive performance exemplifies a holistic, design-led product development strategy that aims to put affordable and accessible video technology in the hands of creative individuals and businesses alike.

The compact ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel 20 democratises broadcast-quality switcher technology, providing direct control through a logical physical interface. Affordable and intuitive, it empowers individuals, institutions and beginners to discover innovative approaches to live broadcasting regardless of the setting or scale of the broadcast.

With professional outputs no longer driven by wealth or technical expertise, this has important cultural benefits for an expanding and diverse user base now able to afford large-scale switcher control technology. In their hands, and on a range of emerging platforms, exciting and innovative approaches are now being expressed in a professional manner indistinguishable from traditional corporate broadcasters.
