MyDriveHero blends tech, gamification, and rewards to incentivise safe driving behaviours and create safer roads for all Australians.

MyDriveHero was designed to improve road safety for all Australians. The app blends tech, gamification and rewards like discounts, giveaways, and prizes to incentivise safe driving. MyDriveHero allows users to track their drives, and monitor their distraction level, fatigue levels, and safety while driving without needing to touch their phone.

Users collect points based on their driving that convert to points that can be cashed in for rewards. It has already seen an incredible 18% increase in safer driving habits across 20,000,000 km driven by over 62,000 users and is nationally recognised for making Australian roads safer.

Design Brief:

MyDriveHero came to us wanting to create a better user experience and refresh their app to be more professional, with a higher-level design that more accurately reflected their brand values and mission. They wanted to rebrand and reposition from ‘KSafe’, to focus more heavily on their mission to save lives through safer driving practices.

We faced two main challenges when developing this app, both centred around our main goal of changing bad driving behaviours without punishing drivers or encouraging phone usage while driving.

The first challenge was creating an easy-to-use user experience and strong user interface, balanced with gamification to incentivise drivers to improve their behaviours and subsequently enhance road safety while earning rewards.

The second challenge was creating a familiar user experience while introducing a new style into the category to help build new habits for users and encourage them to incorporate the app into their daily commuting routine.

Design Process

Following extensive market research and business analysis, we developed an informed strategy for best-practice design. We utilised detailed wireframes to troubleshoot and streamline design before moving on to lo-fi and hi-fi design, motion, and development.

We incorporated best-in-class UX practices and new, advanced components for a modern, user-friendly app. The result exceeded the design brief, showcasing a new and trendy user experience that is familiar and easy to navigate for the user.

We created an application inspired by popular gaming categories and best practices used by the most downloaded apps. This app combines engaging, quality content and design practices to encourage usage and streamline the user experience.

We created a UI kit that showcases the brand, its values, and its unique proposition, and will evolve steadily with the business while maintaining a steadfast connection with the brand. This will provide the client, internal creative teams, and future stakeholders the ability to evolve the brand in line with emerging UI trends.

Our design system and its components were developed to be utilised in numerous ways to meet the users’ needs via either Driving or Default mode. Driving mode requires no input from the driver so they can safely get from one location to another, while Default mode allows them to see driving statistics, account details, rewards, and engage with other users.

The impact of this project has been enormous. The 18% increase in safe driving practices is only enhanced by the significant milestone of 20,000,000 km driven by over 62,000 users. This app has successfully encouraged safer driving practices through a user-friendly, engaging, gamified experience.

From a commercial perspective, the app supports local businesses by generating exposure and potential profits. From a social perspective, this app has successfully enhanced driving practices to work towards safer Australian roads.

Design Excellence

The initial app appeared low quality and did not inspire trust for new users. By elevating its look and feel, we helped this Victorian company reach users nationwide.

Our gamified approach allows us to provide feedback to individuals on their driving in a positive manner, encouraging subtle behaviour modifications. We utilised visual codes most used in gaming to create a user-friendly, familiar interface employing playful, enjoyable designs and experiences that encourage continuous usage.

The app’s purpose is to improve road safety in Australia. As such, we implemented two modes for usage: Default and Driving mode. In Default mode, users can access all information, rewards, and news, engage with user leaderboards, shop for rewards, and enter competitions. In Driving mode, the only information displayed relates to the driving experience to eliminate distractions.

The modular design implemented means the app can be easily updated to suit evolving user needs. This approach also helped to speed up the design and development process.

Design and content were prioritised based on hierarchy. By generating clear levels of communication, we enhanced usability and ensured content was clearly communicated to users. Communication was designed to be conversational, down-to-earth and accessible, avoiding pretentious language to avoid users feeling dismissed or discouraged.

One significant issue we faced with the previous design was that it presented as low-quality and unprofessional. This update introduced a simple, polished style that enhanced the app’s aesthetic and credibility.

Following the update, over $300,000 was raised in a Birchal campaign.

Design Innovation

The prevailing belief is that big changes are necessary to create significant impacts. The truth, as proven by the MyDriveHero app, is that small, consistent changes implemented in people’s everyday practices can produce massive impacts.

Road safety has long been an issue in Australia, with many avoidable accidents occurring almost daily. By guiding users to make small changes through our usable, engaging app, we are revolutionising the driving app category, and safer driving, with a simple idea driven by social good that can be replicated anywhere in the world.

The success of this app comes from its ability to increase engagement in what would normally be considered a mundane, everyday practice. By introducing competition, points, and levels into the process of safer driving practices, we are improving users’ motivation and attention to their driving behaviours when they get on the road.

The UX standards we have implemented ensure usability while including features and styling that make it unique and visually appealing for users. The Default and Driving modes allow users to engage with the app at all touchpoints, without putting themselves or others at risk. The Driving mode is particularly useful as it blocks calls, texts, and messages, and users earn more points if they do not touch their phone at all while driving.

This small idea has the potential to generate a significant global impact. With planned expansion into international markets, MyDriveHero’s goal is to impact over a million lives, and that’s just the beginning.

Design Impact

In under 12 months since the rebrand, MyDriveHero has had an incredible impact. Socially, it has seen an 18% increase in safe driving practices, with 20,000,000 km driven by over 62,000 users.

Additionally, it has established 5 revenue streams, with a focus on revenue growth through continued user base expansion. Partnerships with leading local retailers, grocery, and utility providers continue to attract and retain users as more rewards, giveaways, and competitions are announced.

The adaptability of MyDriveHero is the cornerstone of their scalability, built into the app’s foundation to ensure long-term relevance. Given the ever-changing nature of the digital and mobile landscapes, this element is imperative to ensuring long-term usability and success for the app and its mission.

The key element of our model is gamification. With considerable success across varied industries, this model has proven efficacy and appeal, with a demonstrated path for substantial growth and user-base expansion.

MyDriveHero’s mission is centred around making roads safer for all Australians. The app engages people in an entertaining manner that requires little effort and incentivises them to improve their driving behaviours. This app is taking a step towards positive societal change that will affect the lives of millions both in Australia and on a global scale.

We expect the practices and methods established in this project will lead to further innovations in the driving application category. This project spotlights the real strength of design in driving social good, furthering the state’s reputation as a leader in design innovation.
