Future Classic: Recomposed

Jack Vanzet / Future Classic

Future Classic: Recomposed – an audio-visual reimagining of iconic tracks, blending nostalgia with innovative design.

’Future Classic: Recomposed’ is an audio-visual project that reimagines eight standout songs from Future Classic’s catalogue as ambient and classical compositions. The project includes a visual campaign with still and animated images, capturing the essence of the recomposition concept. Central to the project is a collectible double gatefold vinyl with printed inner sleeves. Inspired by childhood memories of playing with vinyl records and wooden blocks, the project aims to evoke a sense of nostalgia and emotional connection in both the music and visuals.

Design Brief

The design brief for ’Future Classic: Recomposed’ was to transform eight standout songs from Future Classic’s catalogue into ambient and classical compositions, while creating a cohesive visual campaign. The challenge was to unify the diverse artistic styles of multiple artists into a single, accessible experience. Drawing inspiration from childhood memories of playing with vinyl records and coloured wooden blocks, the project aimed to evoke a sense of nostalgia and emotional connection.

By focusing on universally relatable sentiments, the project succeeded in creating a warm, tactile, and emotionally resonant experience. The core deliverable was a collectible double gatefold vinyl with printed inner sleeves, complemented with a full social media campaign, billboards, posters, and more.

Design Process

The design process for ’Future Classic: Recomposed’ began with an exploration of childhood nostalgia, focusing on the tactile and visual experiences of playing with physical toys, rather than digital devices. The brief specified the exploration and execution of the sentiments around interacting with physical products, such as folding out the pages of the gatefold vinyl and pulling out the coloured inner sleeves like a pop-up book. To avoid a cold, digital feel, I used scanned colours from old books, integrating hues and textures to give the project an old-world, handcrafted aesthetic. This approach was akin to weaving, stitching together these elements to form a cohesive visual language that resonated with the ambient and classical reinterpretations of the songs.

The project aimed to evoke the warmth and tactile nature of playing with coloured wooden blocks, creating an emotionally connective experience that was accessible and engaging.

By focusing on universally relatable sentiments and using innovative design techniques, the project met and exceeded the brief, offering a rich, multi-sensory experience that resonated with the audience on multiple levels.

Design Excellence

’Future Classic: Recomposed’ exemplifies design excellence through its functionality, accessibility, aesthetics, and quality. The project integrates a holistic, high-quality user experience, ensuring that each visual and auditory element is fit for purpose and emotionally engaging. The tactile and warm design approach, inspired by childhood nostalgia, creates an accessible and relatable experience for a wide audience.

Functionality and quality were paramount, with the visual assets crafted to complement the ambient and classical compositions. The project’s aesthetics were curated to evoke a sense of nostalgia while maintaining a contemporary feel, creating a visually rich and emotionally resonant experience.

Setting a new benchmark for design excellence in Victoria, the project demonstrates the benefits of investing in professional design. It highlights the importance of emotional connection and accessibility in design, promoting the value of thoughtful, innovative design solutions both locally and internationally.

Design Innovation

’Future Classic: Recomposed’ addresses the challenge of reimagining eight standout songs as ambient and classical compositions by emphasizing a more tactile, less screen-focused approach. Studies, such as those published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), support the importance of physical play in early childhood for fostering creativity, problem-solving skills, and emotional regulation.

The project’s innovative solution lies in its creation of an immersive, multi-sensory experience that contrasts with typical digital interactions. By using scanned colours from old books, the visuals achieve a handcrafted, warm aesthetic that evokes the nostalgic and tactile experience of interacting with physical objects. This approach is particularly important as it responds to the increasing dominance of screen time in modern life, offering a meaningful alternative.

Key features, such as the double gatefold vinyl with printed inner sleeves, resemble the experience of handling a pop-up book. This tactile interaction encourages users, including children, to engage with the music in a physically meaningful way. By focusing on these elements, the project bridges the gap between digital and physical experiences, promoting sensory engagement over passive screen use.

Its focus on user-centred design and the developmental benefits of reduced screen time demonstrates a thoughtful and imaginative solution to the challenge, creating a unique blend of audio and visual elements that engage users in a meaningful way.

Design Impact

’Future Classic: Recomposed’ has the potential to create a lasting and positive impact by emphasizing the importance of engaging young people with tactile, physical products while also highlighting the healing power of meditative music. In an age where screen time is increasingly prevalent and music is often loud and intrusive, this project offers a refreshing alternative that supports healthier development and emotional well-being.

From a social perspective, this project reconnects users with the joy of physical interaction. The double gatefold vinyl with its printed inner sleeves is designed to be explored, much like a cherished pop-up book. This tactile experience encourages mindfulness and a deeper appreciation for music and art, moving away from passive digital consumption.

Research conducted by the University of Queensland has shown that meditative or ambient music can significantly reduce stress and anxiety levels, improve sleep quality, and enhance overall mental health. By incorporating these elements, the project promotes relaxation and mental clarity, offering a therapeutic counterpoint to the often overwhelming and fast-paced nature of modern life.

By combining these two sentiments, ’Future Classic: Recomposed’ not only fosters cognitive and social development in young people through hands-on interaction but also provides a therapeutic, calming experience for all users. This dual focus on tactile engagement and the healing power of music underscores the project’s innovative approach and its potential to make a significant positive impact on society.
