Morespace

Your Creative Agency / Moreland City Council

Activate the public thoroughfare

Presented with the issue of unutilised, unloved vacant properties in an area of Melbourne with a vibrant creative and maker community. We were asked to design a solution that would activate the public thoroughfare, showcase local creative talent and deter vandalism on these retail premises.

Design Excellence

We created a responsive design kit for our client that can be adapted and applied to any window regardless of size, condition or age. In partnership with local woodworkers, we designed a custom retrofittable window box that can be moved and resized to fit the space thus increasing the longevity and sustainability of the project.

Design Impact

Morespace provides small businesses with an opportunity to test their product or service in retail space. Activates our public thoroughfare.

Design Transformation

Morespace as an adaptive design has allowed Moreland Council to activate local public thoroughfare in areas heavily impacted by COVID-19 retail closures. To date during lockdown, over 500 locals have visited the makers/creatives online stores via the QR codes to purchase products. The program itself has been extended to allow for more premises to be transformed which in turn will allow hundreds of local artists and makers the opportunity to sell via the shoppable windows. From a public space perspective this also uplifts the streets and provides local community and visitors with an gallery-like experience.

Design Innovation

Morespace is an interactive community installation showcasing local artists and makers. Each individual showcase window is shoppable through QR codes. We designed a vibrant graphic system with passive messaging calling on locals to respect the space and delve into the stories of each maker.
